BIOGRAPHY

Lakshmanan is a young tabla player whose performance never fails to leave a striking impact on his listeners. He began his journey in tabla at the age of 4 under the guidance of Guru Ahmed Sarfraaz, and is a senior disciple of Guru Mihir Kundu. He graduated from the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society (SIFAS)’s diploma program in tabla, and was awarded the Vadhya Visharad title reserved for the best performing students. An avid practitioner of music, Lakshmanan performs extensively both locally and abroad as a soloist, and is also a sought-after accompanist for instrumental, vocal and dance recitals.
Testimony to his proficiency in the tabla, Lakshmanan has won numerous prizes and accolades for his outstanding performance at music competitions. He clinched the 1st prize for Tabla (Open Category) at the National Indian Music Competitions 2020 organised by the National Arts Council, and the 1st prize for Tabla (Senior Category) at the Sur Taal Sangam Competitions 2019 organised by Zee Television.
While striving to be a top-notch performer of his craft, Lakshmanan is also a passionate teacher of his craft. He is a certified music instructor with the Ministry of Education (MOE), under the Arts and Music Instructors Scheme (AMIS), and has been invited by several organisations across Singapore to teach tabla and Indian classical music.
With a passion for music that extends beyond the stage, Lakshmanan pursued the subject academically. He graduated with a Diploma in Music from Lasalle College of the Arts, and furthered his artistic aspirations at the National University of Singapore, graduating with a Bachelor of Music (Honours) with Distinction in Music and Society from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. Apart from performing and teaching, Lakshmanan's research interests lie in the intersectionality between culture and the human relationship with the arts.
